Bloods, a few thoughts on the community's future

There can be no doubting that the blood community on voobly is knocking on deaths door. If we compare the attendance of the smosh 3v3 tournament a few months ago with recent events you see a worrying trend. We managed sixty-six players, twenty two teams for smosh. The recent blood events , including smosh 4v4, have failed to even reach thirty-two. I'm going to lay out my thoughts on the matter and hopefully others will see fit to give mature and thoughtful opinions on the future of blood maps in AoC.

Clans

Once there were at least three powerhouse blood clans, only Eot can really claim that title at this time. I do not want to get into a debate over this so here is my definition of a "powerhouse blood clan".

- Has at least eight active members
- Has at least four top active team players
- Has several competent 1v1 players
- Play a variety of bloods competitively

You can disagree with me all you want on that criteria, it doesn't really matter. The core point is that the other strong clans are effectively dormant or just do not compete. I have no doubt that these clans could field formidable opposition were they active and willing. Whether you think competition between clans is the key to bloods, is another matter that is actually up for debate.

The Players

Old blood players are still out there. If I thought there was nobody left, I wouldn't have made this thread. The problem I think, is that they have no patience for new blood players. Instead of providing constructive guidance to newbies they abuse them and thus drive them away. If we as a whole in the blood community actually want to revive it, there needs to be a coordinated drive towards that goal. Training up the next generation is not something that requires exceptional ability, just patience and a knowledge of the basics. There also needs to be a central location where blooders can come together and pool resources for learning maps. The voobly guide section is hard to find, though it is very useful if you do stumble upon it.

Tournaments

Once, the aoc blood community knew not the blight that is ratings. They played for fun and for pride. I believe that prizes for blood tournaments need to change. I'm all for frequent "prize less" blood tournaments. I would favour implementing a simple score system in place of medals. The players wouldn't just be rated on matches won, they would be given bonuses for performing well against a superior player, for good behaviour and for noticeable improvement. The recorded games could be pooled, so that a panel could access them at a later date and award the points as they see fit.

Using this system, medals could be awarded for reaching a certain score target, gold for first, silver for second and bronze for all subsequent achievers. This might encourage participation in every blood tournament for those who may never actually achieve a winning position. Of course there would be a separate 1v1, team games and clan rankings.

Speaking from personal experience, I have trained countless amounts of players in minor to major elements of their gaming in CS. A majority end up becoming spiteful because of the hateful element CS seems to breed into players. I have no idea what really stirs this up in the first place, but I can guarantee it's one of the main reasons bloods have been dying out and the tournament participation for all maps have been dropping off.

RM community works because they have huge tournaments, an enforced English-only website with a multitude of experts records being shared daily, and the top players have incentives to play in clans and play regularly (cash is the biggest).

We've tried countless times in providing a AOC CS website for such things, but they always turn into flame-fueled fighting spaces and slowly become inactive. Clan wars have died because there's no accepted standard for maps as clans tend to specialise in one field of maps (Oldschool bloods, Newschool Bloods, CBA, RCB, MCB, Europe etc). Hence, clans end up disputing for ages without any compromise for each other, and IF they do manage to organise a date, the hate for each other reaches boiling point and they often end up contesting the results and circumstances with each other (eot_ vs 7th/LC for two examples - both sides to blame).

You need a complete overhaul of the CS community in order to bring it our of this "black hole". Give players a reason to be united together. It's ironic that Hun/Efkan was the first to realise this, and we didn't respond. If he was able to change from his old bad habits, I'm sure we all can, even Sean and Zanchy and Andreas when they get involved with discussions @.@

Agreed with Barry eot have practically 50-60% of the active decent blood players and they always play fmt if it's 2v2 3v3 or 4v4... it drives new blood players or potentials away.. that's how i personally see it............

I try and teach my clan blood maps but at the end of the day.. it's either they only play vs eachother or they step right up vs the top blood players whom are 60% in eot... not much middle ground tbh, but hey ho, the voobly community in general is '****ed' Barry lol, most are south american who can barely speak english if at all and care too much for points or like to let luck decide wins, e.g. cba/hero 4v4 rdm civs..... so........ I admire your post but I don't think much if anything will be done

All of the suggestions can be easily implemented.

VCOM can run any type of tournament and system the Bloods community wants..I would help as much as I can to kickstart things.

BUT it means the Bloods community themselves getting off their lazy asses and getting involved. From my POV all they want to do is sit back and complain how everything is dead and nothing is done as it should be etc etc etc.

To be honest I won't hold my breath on the Community coming together and supporting anything for Bloods, a shame but the truth.

Good post but I think you missed a few big parts of why bloods are underplayed.

1. Takes more skill than CBA/CBA Hero
2. Only map played 24/7 is CBA/CBA Hero
3. Ratings

To explain ratings in further detail the problem is CBA is an easy map that doesn't require much skill. Therefore its easier points. My suggestion to solve this problem would be to simply make cba 4v4 games which are played the most, worth half the points for a while, and increase blood win points by 25%, this would get everyone trying new bloods where there would be endless amounts of maps being played.

Leading too more gaming varieties -> More people happy -> More people leaving other gaming sites and joining voobly
